Introduction

  • Field network engineers face a specific trade-off when specifying switches for small outdoor nodes: the ones small enough to fit inside a compact junction box rarely have two fiber ports for ring protection, and the ones with ring-capable dual fiber ports are almost always too large for the enclosure on hand.
  • The Olycom IM-FP244FE resolves that trade-off directly.
  • In a housing measuring just 113.8 × 93 × 34.9mm — the smallest form factor in the IM PoE fiber series — it delivers 2 × 100Mbps SFP fiber ports for ring topology and dual-homed uplink capability, plus 4 × 10/100Mbps PoE RJ45 ports delivering up to 15.4W per port (802.3af standard; 30W 802.3at with special configuration) to power the local device cluster.
  • Two fiber ports mean that if any upstream segment fails, traffic reroutes through the surviving path automatically — keeping all four powered endpoints online without manual intervention, without a management interface, and without anyone needing to visit the site.
  • For deployments where Fast Ethernet is sufficient, the enclosure is tight, the fiber topology demands ring protection, and PoE is non-negotiable, the IM-FP244FE is the only switch in the series that checks all four boxes simultaneously — certified to NEMA-TS2, EN 50121-4, IEC 60068, and protected by 6KV Ethernet surge and Level 3 EMS immunity as standard.

Key Features

  • 2 × 100Mbps SFP Fiber Ports — Dual fiber ports enable fiber ring participation, daisy-chain extension, and dual-homed uplinks for automatic path redundancy; single-mode support to 120km (1310/1550nm; 1490/1550nm); multimode to 2km (1310nm); hot-swappable, no configuration required
  • 4 × 10/100Mbps PoE RJ45 Ports — All four ports deliver IEEE 802.3af PoE (15.4W per port); 802.3at (30W) with special power configuration; per-port auto-detection of PoE vs. non-PoE devices; Auto MDI/MDIX on all ports eliminates crossover cable requirements
  • Dedicated 48V PoE Power Input — Independent PoE supply (48V, max 52V) keeps switching and power delivery subsystems separate; reverse polarity protection standard; switching remains active independent of PoE load state
  • 40Gbps Non-Blocking Internal Bandwidth / 4MB Packet Buffer — Store-and-forward architecture with wire-speed performance across all six ports; handles burst traffic from all four PoE endpoints without frame loss
  • 6KV Ethernet Surge Protection — Port-level lightning and transient protection across all four RJ45 interfaces; shields both the switch and connected PoE endpoints from induced surge events at outdoor and exposed locations
  • Level 3 EMS Immunity: EN 61000-4-2/3/4/5/6/8 — Full industrial electromagnetic immunity covering ESD (±15KV air / ±6KV contact), radiated susceptibility, EFT, surge, conducted susceptibility, and power frequency magnetic field
  • NEMA-TS2 Traffic Control Certified — Qualified for US roadside and traffic infrastructure cabinet deployment
  • EN 50121-4 Rail Traffic Certified — Meets European railway EMC standards for wayside trackside and onboard rolling stock applications
  • IEC 60068-2-6/27/32 Vibration, Shock & Freefall Certified — Mechanically validated for vehicle-mounted and trackside deployment under continuous vibration and impact stress
  • -40°C to +75°C Operating Temperature — Cold-start rated; full performance at temperature extremes without derating; storage to +85°C
  • 113.8 × 93 × 34.9mm IP40 Corrugated Metal Housing — The most compact dual-fiber PoE switch in the IM series; DIN-rail mounting; fits inside enclosures where larger ring-capable switches physically cannot
  • FCC Part 15 Class A / EN 55022 Class A | CE / LVD EN60950 | 3-Year Warranty

Applications

  • Compact Ring Nodes Powering Four PoE Devices — The defining scenario: a fiber ring passes through a small outdoor cabinet or junction box where four PoE devices — cameras, sensors, APs, or controllers — need both power and connectivity. A single-fiber switch can connect but cannot protect the ring. A larger dual-fiber switch won’t fit the enclosure. The IM-FP244FE does both, in the smallest possible footprint. When the upstream fiber is cut, the ring reroutes through the second SFP port and all four powered devices stay online — automatically, without anyone noticing anything happened
  • Traffic Intersection Micro-Cabinets — NEMA-TS2 certification places the IM-FP244FE inside qualified roadside installations. At intersections with compact NEMA-TS2 cabinets housing a traffic controller, two cameras, a wireless sensor, and an environmental monitor, the switch maintains ring connectivity along the corridor while powering all four PoE devices from its dedicated 48V input — in a chassis small enough not to displace other equipment inside an already-crowded cabinet
  • Railway Platform Edge Enclosures — EN 50121-4 and IEC 60068 certifications cover deployment in the compact enclosures found at platform ends and lineside posts where space is governed by trackside clearance requirements. A typical platform edge node runs four devices — a platform camera, a passenger counter, a help point terminal, and a PA speaker interface — all needing PoE and all connected through a ring that must survive a fiber cut without service interruption. The IM-FP244FE handles this in less panel space than any alternative
  • Perimeter Security Ring Nodes at Constrained Mounting Points — Along industrial perimeter fences, pipeline corridors, and utility boundaries, monitoring nodes must often be installed inside standard-size weatherproof enclosures mounted directly on poles or fences. The IM-FP244FE’s 34.9mm depth fits inside these enclosures while maintaining ring continuity and powering the four PoE devices — camera, access reader, wireless link, and sensor — at each point
  • Tunnel & Underground Infrastructure Nodes — In road tunnels, metro tunnels, and underground utility corridors, equipment enclosures are recessed into walls at fixed intervals with strict dimensional limits. Fast Ethernet speeds are more than sufficient for the cameras, emergency call points, air quality sensors, and lighting controllers that populate these nodes, and the compact dual-fiber housing fits where Gigabit alternatives with larger footprints do not
  • Solar-Powered Remote Site Ring Participation — Off-grid monitoring stations fed by solar-charged 48V battery banks sit at intervals along a fiber ring connecting pipeline monitoring, river gauging, or weather observation equipment. The IM-FP244FE draws its switching power from the same DC bus as the PoE supply, participates in the fiber ring for fault-tolerant connectivity back to the operations center, and powers up to four field devices — all from an enclosure compact enough to fit inside a standard weatherproof utility box mounted on a post
  • Vehicle Onboard Networked Camera Clusters — In transit vehicles, emergency response units, and fleet trucks where onboard fiber networks connect multiple camera positions, the IM-FP244FE serves a four-camera cluster at one body section — front cab, rear cargo, or side panels — with dual fiber ports maintaining the vehicle backbone ring and PoE powering each camera without separate wiring runs. IEC 60068 shock and vibration certification confirms mechanical fitness for continuous vehicle operation
