Introduction

  • Field enclosures have a size problem.
  • Roadside signal boxes, pole-top cabinets, railway trackside housings, and building junction niches are designed around civil infrastructure dimensions — not around the growing number of network devices that modern automation, surveillance, and transportation systems require inside them.
  • When a 100Mbps fiber backbone arrives at one of these enclosures and four copper devices need connecting, the standard answer — a full-size industrial switch — often does not physically fit.
  • The IM-FS240FE exists to close that gap.
  • At 113.8 × 93 × 34.9mm, it is among the most compact dual-fiber industrial switches available at this port count, yet it delivers 2 × 100M SFP fiber ports and 4 × 10/100M RJ45 copper ports with the complete industrial certification stack: IEC 61000-4 Level 3 EMC immunity across all five parameters, 6KV Ethernet surge protection, NEMA-TS2 traffic control, EN 50121-4 railway, and IEC 60068 vibration/shock/freefall testing.
  • The DC 12–52V wide-voltage input accepts whatever DC supply the enclosure runs — 12V vehicle systems, 24V automation bus, 48V telecom plant — without a dedicated converter.
  • No PoE circuitry, no Gigabit overhead, no management interface: just a hardened, compact fiber distribution node that fits where larger switches do not, draws ≤5W from the supply, and operates without any configuration for the life of the installation.

Key Features

  • 2 × 100M SFP + 4 × 10/100M RJ45 — Dual fiber ports for ring, chain, or dual-uplink topologies; four copper ports for local device distribution; SM (20–120km) and MM (2km) modules supported; BiDi single-fiber compatible; mix fiber types across the two SFP slots at backbone transition points
  • 113.8 × 93 × 34.9mm — Fits Where Others Don't — The compact chassis resolves the physical installation constraint in roadside signal boxes, pole-top enclosures, and trackside junction housings where a 158mm or larger chassis cannot be accommodated alongside existing terminal blocks, power supplies, and cable management hardware
  • DC 12–52V Wide-Voltage Input / ≤5W Self-Consumption — No dedicated power converter required at the field enclosure; the full DC input range covers every common industrial, vehicle, and telecom DC voltage standard; ≤5W draw preserves battery or solar runtime at off-grid sites
  • 100Mbps Native — No Gigabit Overhead on Legacy Backbone — Direct compatibility with 100BASE-FX, 100BASE-LX, 100BASE-EX, and 100BASE-BX fiber infrastructure; connects into existing Fast Ethernet rings and chains without upstream reconfiguration or speed-matching issues; right-sized for the device types deployed on 100Mbps networks
  • 6KV Ethernet Surge Protection — All four RJ45 ports individually hardened; protects both the switch and the connected copper devices from transients propagating through outdoor cable runs in both directions
  • IEC 61000-4 Level 3 — Five-Parameter Full Coverage — ESD / Radiated Immunity / EFT / Surge / Conducted Immunity: the complete industrial EMC suite, not a partial compliance; CE-EMC / CE LVD EN60950 / FCC Class A
  • NEMA-TS2 + EN 50121-4 + IEC 60068 — Traffic control, railway, vibration, shock, and freefall certifications in one device; the certification breadth required for procurement across road traffic, transit, and transportation infrastructure projects simultaneously
  • Dual-Fiber Topology Support — Ring pass-through, dual-homed uplink, or fiber-type bridging across two SFP ports; the same flexibility as larger dual-SFP models in a chassis less than 35mm deep
  • Zero-Configuration Unmanaged Operation — No CLI, no Web GUI, no setup; powers up and operates; field replacement requires only reconnecting cables — no configuration recovery, no credential management, no firmware dependency

Applications

  • Roadside Signal & Traffic Cabinets — Standard NEMA or IEC roadside signal cabinets allocate precise DIN-rail space for each component. Where the fiber distribution node must share a 35mm-deep DIN-rail panel with a power supply, terminal blocks, and surge arrestors, a 60mm-deep switch occupies space that does not exist. The IM-FS240FE's 34.9mm depth fits standard shallow DIN-rail panels directly; NEMA-TS2 certification satisfies the procurement specification; 100Mbps matches the installed fiber backbone speed at the majority of traffic control sites built before 2015
  • Railway Trackside Signal Housings — EN 50121-4 certification is the entry requirement for railway trackside equipment. Trackside signal housings are compact steel enclosures with limited internal volume; the IM-FS240FE connects the trackside fiber ring and distributes data to up to four local signal interface devices — axle counters, train detection units, wayside communication terminals — within the physical constraints of the housing, where a 60mm chassis would require a larger enclosure and a civil works change
  • Pole-Top & Street Furniture Network Nodes — Urban and campus fiber distribution increasingly reaches pole-top enclosures and street furniture housings where a single fiber ring drops in from the buried duct and local devices — cameras, environmental sensors, small wireless units — need copper connectivity. The IM-FS240FE's dual SFP ports maintain the ring segment in both directions while the four copper ports serve local devices, all within a housing that has physical space for exactly one compact DIN-rail module
  • Vehicle & Rolling Stock Onboard Distribution — Onboard network nodes in trains, trams, and buses connect passenger information displays, CCTV cameras, and communications equipment through a fiber backbone that runs the length of the vehicle. The IM-FS240FE mounts in underbody or above-ceiling network cabinets where space is engineered to millimeter tolerances; IEC 60068 vibration and shock certification qualifies it for the continuous mechanical stress of vehicle operation; DC 12V input accepts the vehicle electrical system directly
  • Building Riser Transition Points on 100Mbps Infrastructure — In multi-floor buildings where the riser fiber operates at 100Mbps and floor junction boxes serve four devices per floor, the IM-FS240FE terminates both riser fiber directions at the floor node and connects local devices from a chassis compact enough to share the junction box with the fiber splice tray and patch panel hardware — without requiring a dedicated network cabinet on every floor
